Promoting the Open Source project and community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open source is source code<\/a> that is made freely available for possible modification and redistribution. Products include permission to use the source code,[1]<\/a><\/sup> design documents,[2]<\/a><\/sup> or content of the product. The open-source model<\/strong> is a decentralized software development<\/a> model that encourages open collaboration<\/a>.[3]<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup> A main principle of open-source software development<\/a> is peer production<\/a>, with products such as source code, blueprints<\/a>, and documentation freely available to the public. The open-source movement<\/a> in software began as a response to the limitations of proprietary code<\/a>. The model is used for projects such as in open-source appropriate technology<\/a>,[5]<\/a><\/sup> and open-source drug discovery.[6]<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

GNU<\/strong> (\/\u0261nu\u02d0\/<\/a> \u24d8<\/a><\/sup>)[3]<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup> is an extensive collection of free software<\/a> (385 packages as of September 2023[5]<\/a><\/sup>), which can be used as an operating system or can be used in parts with other operating systems.[6]<\/a>[7]<\/a>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The use of the completed GNU tools led to the family of operating systems popularly known as Linux<\/a>.[9]<\/a><\/sup> Most of GNU is licensed under the GNU Project<\/a>‘s own General Public License (GPL<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GNU is also the project within which the free software concept originated. Richard Stallman<\/a>, the founder of the project, views GNU as a “technical means to a social end”.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Relatedly, Lawrence Lessig<\/a> states in his introduction to the second edition of Stallman’s book Free Software, Free Society<\/a><\/em> that in it Stallman has written about “the social aspects of software and how Free Software can create community and social justice”.[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GNU General Public License<\/strong> (GNU GPL<\/strong> or simply GPL<\/strong>)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

is a series of widely used free software licenses<\/a>, or copyleft<\/a>, that guarantee end users<\/a> the four freedoms to run, study, share, and modify the software.[7]<\/a><\/sup> The license was the first copyleft<\/a> for general use, and was originally written by Richard Stallman<\/a>, the founder of the Free Software Foundation<\/a> (FSF), for the GNU Project<\/a>. The license grants the recipients of a computer program<\/a> the rights of the Free Software Definition<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup> The licenses in the GPL series are all copyleft licenses, which means that any derivative work<\/a> must be distributed under the same or equivalent license terms. It is more restrictive than the Lesser General Public License<\/a>, and even further distinct from the more widely-used permissive software licenses<\/a> BSD<\/a>, MIT<\/a>, and Apache<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>
